Operation and maintenance

Maintenance is the foundation of continuous operation while keeping costs low and ensuring a long life cycle for water industry infrastructure. To maintain every device and machine within a system and keep the whole in perfect condition, it is necessary to constantly control and monitor it.

Proactive – or better yet, predictive – maintenance is the art of malfunction precognition. The rule is simple: act before an issue becomes an event.

Whether it is a water distribution network or a wastewater treatment system, unplanned downtime can have a serious impact on a company's operations. Make sure unplanned downtime never happens! Gather all available data on the status of a machine or device, detect signs of potential trouble, analyse the situation and fix it before it becomes a problem.

Fulfil water industry expectations and meet industry safety requirements

Choose the right tools and solutions to make predictive maintenance an extremely easy task:

  • a connected field service network that provides real-time monitoring of equipment in the field
  • cost-effective, high-performance real-time monitoring over wide areas
  • drives with built-in diagnostic tools based on artificial intelligence
  • a digital virtual space for testing solutions that significantly reduces costs and enables status-based monitoring

Powerful analytical tools play a fundamental role in processing data and using it for predictive maintenance. For this purpose Mitsubishi Electric has created various technologies using Mitsubishi Electric’s own proprietary artificial intelligence mechanisms. With their help, a system can be built that recognises early signs of wear and tear in parts and components, and maintenance team members can plan maintenance activities in advance and make optimal use of working time. (For example, an increasing vibration amplitude may suggest a worn bearing. If it is replaced during a planned shutdown, there will be no losses that could result from unplanned disconnection of water to residents. You can find more on this subject at this link.)

Always pursuing the principle of modularity and scalability, Mitsubishi Electric solutions can be applied at any level of control, from a single component to a group of machines all the way to comprehensive maintenance management of the entire enterprise. As an example, thanks to automatic AI fault diagnosis, Mitsubishi Electric frequency inverters not only provide useful data for maintenance activities, they also diagnose themselves.

Real-time intelligent monitoring of connected equipment, business rules and advanced alarm logic and an uninterrupted visibility empower operators to respond proactively to events and to prioritise tasks.

ICONICS, Mitsubishi Electric’s comprehensive IoT platform, includes a complex distributed alarm management which is able to integrate alerts from multiple systems (i.e., SCADA, telemetry, Building Management Systems (BMS), weather / environmental systems). It is time consuming and difficult to draw correlations when manually toggling between alarm systems, especially under tight time constraints. ICONICS properly manages these alarms, prioritises them and provides reliable notifications to the relevant operating personnel.

In combination with an advanced Connected Field Worker Solution (CFSWorX™), operators get an intelligent workflow technology to manage their maintenance tasks and to respond to incidents quickly.
In this way, utilities are able to proactively respond to events, drive labour efficiencies, improve their overall asset condition and serviceability and reduce operational costs substantially.
